Continually Grooming Skin: Abscesses. Primary bacterial infections in cats are not common in the United States. Abscesses, however, may develop in untreated wounds fol¬lowing a fight. The opponent's sharp claws will penetrate the cat's skin and deposit bacteria in the wound. Infection may be evident 3 to 5 days later. Treatment consists of cleansing the wound and applying antibiotics.
Ringworm. Skin diseases are often encountered and range from simple allergies to chronic ec¬zemas. Ringworm, actually a fungus, not only is a stubborn condition but also can be highly con¬tagious to the people in the household. The cat complicates the treating of skin problems be¬cause it is continually grooming skin grooming its skin. Griseo-fulvin, an antibiotic, has been used successfully in the treatment of ringworm. The skin is laid over a slanting board and held there by the operator who shifts its position so that all parts of the skin come beneath the glazing cylinder which moves up and down in a straight line, continually grooming skin bearing on the skin with a heavy pressure. Some skins on which a dull polish is wanted are brushed over the surface with a revolving roller brush. Leathers on which a high polish is desired are sponged with finish, and dried and glazed several times in succession. If an especially smooth surface is desired the leather is embossed after the first glazing. This is done by placing the skin beneath the hot steel plates of a heavy hydraulic press. The last operation is sponging a Light coating of oil over the skin. Probably the most satisfactory birds for small-cage breeding are some of the foreign birds ause finches.Cats and Birds. There is no question that cats do stalk and kill birds, but cats are an insignif¬icant factor in overall bird mortality. To cite two of a number of biological studies of the stomach contents of cats, only 6 of 50 cats in Wisconsin had eaten birds as their last meal, and birds provided a final repast for only 4% of a group of cats in Oklahoma. Wildlife authori¬ties insist that other birds—jays, for example-kill more birds than do cats. Moreover, cats are themselves the prey of some birds, like the great horned owl.
On The Other Hand See Foreign Birds Etry:Cat food—Twice daily; offer meat-gravy mixture, meat gravy mixed with potatoes and some cooked meat; prepared canned cat food may be used instead, contains all essentials. Milk— Fresh daily. Vegetables—Essential; must be cooked; give any pet likes. Water—Essential; must be clean, fresh, and available at all times. Fish—May be raw or cooked; give any pet likes. Meat—Raw meat diet alone often causes form of indiges¬tion commonly called "fits." THERE are numerous varieties of birds which are suitable for cage life in either the school or the home. Many species become gentle and permit, even coax for, a certain amount of petting and handling. Some of the most attractive and interesting birds for cage life are the foreign birds etry birds, the greater number of which come from Africa and Australia, although equally interesting pets come from our do¬mesticated birds and from our native wild birds. Here again some languages have more elaborate morphological systems than others. To express number, English has two systematic possibilities-singular bird and plural birds—and many that are nonsystematic: two birds, many birds, few birds, a flock, and so on. In classical Greek this section of the morphological system was fuller by one degree: ornis ("bird") and ornithes ("birds"), but also ornithe ("two birds"). Word Order. As inflection disappears from a language, other devices assume its function. Char¬acteristic is the English use of word order.
