Cage Supply: Used for sleeping, hiding, rearing of young. Supply lining materials: grasses, dry lichens, bits of old kapok. Pull kapok apart into small pieces and drop with other materials on cage supply bottom. Never use cotton.
Wild mice are playful, need toys. Plant a stiff-branching shrub in corner of cage supply; pets like to race through it. Tie tightly twisted and knotted cord to top of cage supply and allow to dangle down. Provide chipmunk-type wheel. Many other items may be used (see cage supply diagram, Part IV).
Transfer fledgling to cage supply when it becomes active. Use commercial canary cage supply for young jay; large bird cage supply for crow and magpie (see Part IV). Cover cage supply bottom with thick layer of bird gravel. Place limb with sturdy branches in cage supply as perch. Train pet to use cage supply for headquarters by keeping food and water there. |
